The Legendary Williams, Receives Special Entry for First Australian Open in Five Years.

A seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has secured a special invitation for the first Grand Slam of the year, which kicks off on the 18th of January in Melbourne.

A Landmark Comeback to Melbourne Park

Tournament officials confirmed on the weekend that the 45-year-old legend will grace the courts again at the tournament venue a staggering 28 years after her first appearance. During 1998, she overcame her younger sister Serena in the second round before exiting in the quarter-finals to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Summer Swing

Venus had earlier stated in the month of November her intention to compete in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a wild card, a fortnight prior to the Melbourne event. The Australian Open noted that Williams is also entered to participate in Australia's Hobart International a following week, just before the action begins at Melbourne Park.

Her last appearance in Melbourne was in 2021, and she has been a finalist in the singles competition on two occasions, losing to Serena in the finals of 2003 and 2017.

"I’m excited to be back in Australia and looking forward to playing during the summer season," Venus stated. "I’ve had so many incredible moments there, and I’m grateful for the chance to go back to a place that has meant so much to my professional journey."

By the Numbers

Williams' overall record at the Australian Open stands at an impressive 54 wins and 21 defeats. The upcoming edition will mark the 22nd time she has appeared in the main draw.

Setting a New Record

Officials pointed out that Williams is set to become the most senior female player to take part in an Australian Open singles competition, eclipsing the record previously held by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was forty-four when she lost in the opening round at Melbourne Park in 2015.

Recent Personal Milestone

In the final days of December, Williams married Danish-born model and actor Andrea Preti in Palm Beach, Florida.
