The East African nation Receives Valuable Artefacts Following a Century Holding in Germany
A total of Twelve historical items were ceremoniously returned to Ethiopia following staying by a family in Germany for in excess of 100 years.
The artefacts, originally gathered in the 1920's by Germany's diplomat to the Ethiopian empire Franz Weiss and his spouse Hedwig, were delivered on this past Wednesday to the Ethiopian Studies Institute at the capital's university.
The set contained royal crowns, shields and paintings, each viewed as historically significant in Ethiopia.
"The items continue to serve as a mark of the enduring and amicable ties between Germany and Ethiopia," remarked Ferdinand von Weyhe, the envoy to Ethiopia.
Professor a professor, whose father was born during the household's diplomatic posting in the nation, delivered the items at a ceremony witnessed by the Minister of Tourism the tourism official.
He explained that the family's intention to give back the artefacts was to "share their beauty with the public and maintain the culture and history connected to my father's beginning."
These items were either gifts or acquisitions, according to the family.
"I would like to thank the Weiss relatives for concretely expressing their sincere love for Ethiopia by carefully preserving these artifacts and crucially guaranteeing their homecoming to their rightful nation," stated the minister of tourism.
The minister continued that the pieces would in the near future be available to the general audience for research and academic study, calling the decision a significant step in safeguarding the nation's historical legacy.
"Efforts persist to bring back historical artifacts that are held in the custody of individuals and organizations all over the planet," she said.
During colonialism in Africa, many of historical objects were taken.
The demand by nations in Africa for the return of stolen objects has been responded to by certain progress in lately - though some artefacts are only on short-term display.
Back in 2022, Germany was the initial country to return a selection of the famous Benin artifacts to Nigeria in an attempt to address its "troubled colonial history."
