Boxing is in a real slump this season, with limited compelling matchups and considerably fewer engaging contests than typical. The anticipation of a high-stakes and fascinating heavyweight contest between Parker and Fabio Wardley at the O₂ Arena brings a measure of relief to the struggling sport. The last man standing will almost certainly face champion Oleksandr Usyk next season. In stark contrast, the defeated fighter is probably going to mourn the unavoidable deterioration of their hard-won plaudits.

He always gets up but Wardley hits harder than any fighter he's fought – with the exclusion of Wilder who seemed a shadow of a devastating finisher when Parker swept to a one-sided points victory in late 2023.

Wardley, a former white-collar slugger, who only took up boxing when he was 20, had zero amateur background and has always had to overcome doubts about his comparatively limited skills. But he is equally near to a world title challenge.

“This is the most significant fight, currently, in the heavyweight class. These two guys have accepted the challenge when neither one needed to make this fight. Parker is the interim champion and they have already ordered the champion to fight him, but the Ukrainian was sidelined. Joseph insists on fighting.

“Fabio is also in a fantastic position and he could have just waited for his opportunity. He said ‘No, thanks.’ He chose to box – and versus Parker because it offers him an opportunity to jump the queue.”

The View from Parker

Parker, set to be 34 in January, said: “This is all or nothing. I am not focused on a loss. I honor my adversary and what he has done and the way he's trained for this fight. But I am on a different level and I am going to show it on the day of the bout.”

Wardley's Stance

Wardley turns 31 in December, and he said: “It is a massive night for the two of us. It is undoubtedly the largest contest of my career and the biggest fight of my life. But every time I step up I excel under pressure. The upcoming fight will be no different. The divide between Parker's status and what others believe about me has been a frequent topic throughout my career.

“He's a seasoned veteran for a considerable period, with a many bouts on his ledger. Certainly not is he an old man but he has been in the boxing world for a long time and had numerous grueling matches. I too have faced intense battles and I understand they take a toll. He has been in a far greater number of those compared to me.”

The Ultimate Prediction

But the general belief is that Parker will be too seasoned, and too skilful, for Wardley. He should win a bruising battle with the confidence that he is the prime candidate for a title shot against Usyk – the undisputed best in the division by a significant margin.
