New York Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Incident
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will recover well after being shot in central New York early Sunday morning.
Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during their latest talk.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he will come through this without issue.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd would leave the hospital, where he has been listed as serious yet stable.
“Still unsure,” the coach said. “Yet I must mention, from our conversation, he seemed very positive. And again, that’s what gives me comfort, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”
New York police issued security footage earlier this week of a man sought in the shooting of Boyd. A motive for the shooting is currently under review and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries were reported.
The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday morning about halfway between the famous arena and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was taken to a local hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, police said. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn shared Boyd has occupied his thinking “a great deal” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a newborn.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“There is a procedure involved, which I won’t get into, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd hasn’t played this season, his debut year with New York, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with a shoulder injury that required surgery.
Boyd came to New York as a free agent in March and was expected to be an important component of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during preseason drills on early August and had to be helped off.
Boyd continued to be present all season long while healing from his surgery.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn said. “Certainly, he attends every game. He is completely involved. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He signed with Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad after that. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with the Jets in the spring.
