Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has unveiled what is being described as the largest changes to combat unauthorized immigration "in decades".

The proposed measures, modeled on the tougher stance adopted by Denmark's centre-left government, renders asylum approval conditional, limits the appeal process and proposes entry restrictions on countries that block returns.

Refugee Status to Become Temporary

Those receiving refugee status in the UK will only be allowed to remain in the country temporarily, with their case evaluated biannually.

This implies people could be repatriated to their native land if it is considered "secure".

This approach mirrors the policy in that European nation, where asylum seekers get temporary residence documents and must request extensions when they expire.

Authorities states it has already started supporting people to repatriate to Syria by choice, following the overthrow of the Syrian government.

It will now begin considering forced returns to the region and other countries where people have not regularly been deported to in recent times.

Refugees will also need to be resident in the UK for twenty years before they can request indefinite leave to remain - up from the current five years.

At the same time, the administration will establish a new "work and study" immigration pathway, and urge asylum recipients to secure jobs or begin education in order to transition to this option and qualify for residency faster.

Solely individuals on this work and study pathway will be able to sponsor family members to accompany them in the UK.

Legal System Changes

Government officials also intends to terminate the system of allowing numerous reviews in protection claims and replacing it with a single, consolidated appeal where all grounds must be raised at once.

A recently established appeals body will be established, comprising trained adjudicators and supported by initial counsel.

For this purpose, the administration will present a bill to alter how the family unity rights under Article 8 of the ECHR is interpreted in asylum hearings.

Exclusively persons with direct dependents, like minors or guardians, will be able to continue living in the UK in future.

The government will also limit the use of Clause 3 of the ECHR, which prohibits inhuman or degrading treatment.

Government officials claim the present understanding of the law permits repeated challenges against denied protection - including dangerous offenders having their deportation blocked because their treatment necessities cannot be fulfilled.

The human exploitation law will be tightened to restrict final-hour slavery accusations used to prevent returns by compelling asylum seekers to provide all relevant information promptly.

Ending Housing and Financial Support

The home secretary will rescind the statutory obligation to supply protection claimants with support, terminating assured accommodation and financial allowances.

Support would remain accessible for "persons without means" but will be withheld from those with permission to work who do not, and from persons who violate regulations or resist deportation orders.

Those who "intentionally become impoverished" will also be refused assistance.

Under plans, asylum seekers with assets will be obligated to contribute to the cost of their lodging.

This resembles Denmark's approach where refugee applicants must employ resources to finance their accommodation and authorities can seize assets at the customs.
