Eric Adams Plans to Back Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayor's Election

New York City Mayor Mayor Adams has announced his decision to back Andrew Cuomo in the upcoming election for mayor, despite months of public tension between the pair of Democrats.

A Surprising Reversal After Recent Criticism

Only weeks ago, Adams had publicly condemned Cuomo, describing him as a “snake and a liar” and alleging of having “a career of marginalizing Black political contenders.” However, in a new statement, Adams changed his position, revealing he now plans to appear with the former governor in areas where he holds strong support.

“It's essential to mobilize the Black and brown communities that have experienced gentrification on how critical this election is,” the mayor stated.

He added, “Residents have seen their rents increase due to neighborhood changes and they have been disregarded in those areas, and I plan to visit to those communities and speak one on one with organizers and groups and I’m going to walk with the governor in those neighborhoods and get them engaged.”

Race Dynamics and Recent Events

The election battle has so far been shaped by the competition between the former governor and democratic socialist his main rival, whose increasing popularity has attracted attention worldwide and symbolized hopes for a rejuvenated progressive wing of the Democrats.

In a latest mayoral debate, both the democratic socialist and GOP candidate his conservative opponent stated they would reject the mayor's support if extended.

Earlier this year, Adams had begun his re-election campaign as an unaffiliated candidate after being indicted on legal accusations which were later thrown out in return for his assistance with government enforcement actions across the city.

During a unrelated press conference on Thursday, the mayor answered reporters inquiring into the support announcement by stating, “I'm meeting Andrew later today.”

The announcement came a day after the two politicians were seen sitting courtside together at the New York Knicks’ season opener at Madison Square Garden, which took place immediately following a contentious mayoral debate.
